Logic Synthesis Fundamentals: From RTL to Gates

Logic synthesis is the automated process that converts RTL code into a gate-level netlist built from a specific manufacturing technology's standard cells. It's the first major step in turning a design description into something that can actually be built.

What Logic Synthesis Involves

A synthesis tool first translates RTL into a technology-independent representation of the logic, then optimizes this representation for the constraints provided – typically timing, area, and power targets. Finally, it maps the optimized logic onto the actual standard cells available in the target manufacturing library, selecting specific gate sizes and types to meet the design's requirements.

Why It Matters

The quality of results from synthesis has a direct, lasting impact on the rest of the implementation flow. Poorly constrained or poorly structured synthesis runs can leave timing problems that are much harder (and more expensive) to fix during place-and-route than they would have been to address at this stage.
