Tape-Out Readiness: The Final Checklist Before Manufacturing

Tape-out is the point of no return – once a design is submitted to the foundry, changes require an expensive and time-consuming re-spin. A rigorous, comprehensive readiness checklist is the final safeguard before this irreversible step.

What Tape-Out Readiness Involves

Beyond individual signoff checks – timing, DRC, LVS, IR drop, EM – tape-out readiness also confirms that scan chains and other design-for-test (DFT) structures are fully verified, that all required waivers are documented and approved, and that the final GDSII merge (combining all blocks, including any hard IP or memory macros) is complete and correctly assembled. Every item on the checklist needs an owner and a verifiable, documented sign-off.

Why It Matters

A single overlooked item – an unwaived DRC violation, an incomplete timing corner, a DFT structure that wasn't fully verified – can mean an entire re-spin, costing months of schedule and significant manufacturing cost. A disciplined, exhaustive checklist process is what turns tape-out from a risky leap into a confident, well-supported decision.
